What is Paralysis and How Does It Affect the Body?

Paralysis is the loss of muscle function in one or more parts of the body. It happens when signals between the brain and muscles are disrupted — due to injury, disease, or damage to the nervous system. Depending on the cause and location of damage, paralysis can be partial or complete, temporary or permanent.

Types of Paralysis

  • Hemiplegia: Affects one side of the body — typically the arm and leg on the same side. Most commonly seen in stroke survivors.
  • Paraplegia: Affects the lower half of the body, including both legs. Usually caused by spinal cord injuries at the thoracic level or below.
  • Quadriplegia (Tetraplegia): Affects all four limbs and, in many cases, the trunk. This results from high-level spinal cord injury or severe brain trauma.

Why Paralysis Rehabilitation Matters

Rehabilitation after paralysis is not optional, it is the primary treatment. Without it, the nervous system does not rewire. Muscles weaken further. Secondary complications develop. Families carry a heavier burden every month. With the right program, the opposite becomes possible.
